Gig Possibilities, Art Show Timeline, Zine, and Events!!

From MSCA president Kevin L. Williams:

Hi, MSCAers,

Lots more information to share, so I tried to organize it all chronologically.  Always keep an eye out for information at www.midsouthcartoonists.org

YARD & ART SALE
September 14th! The War Room at Trinity Commons is hosting a Yard and Art (Yart?) sale at their store! Katie Jones and Shawn Howe of the MSCA will be in attendance from 10am to 4pm!

SKETCHY SATURDAY WITH THE MSCA
Just a quick note that our Sat-Art-Day is coming up September 21, 2024, from 10am – 2pm.  This will happen at 901 Comics East, 8551 Macon Road, Cordova, TN.  Just bring some art supplies, a tablet, sketchbook or use some of our supplies and sketch, draw, work – all for your heart’s desires. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase from “The Bar With No Name”. This will be our last Sat-Art-Day for 2024.

GB&S ZINE CRITIQUE SESSION
The same day, Dale will hold a critique opportunity for work submitted to any of the zines.  He says the only requirement is that “participants are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work which will always be done in a supportive, constructive and casual environment, but can at the same time be challenging.” If you have questions about submitting cartoons to the MSCA “The Good, The Bad, And The Sketchy” zine this would be a great time to find answers.

CORDOVA LIBRARY FANTASY FAIRE
Katie Jones shares that September 21st is The Fantasy Faire at the Cordova Library on Trinity Road from 10am to 4pm both inside and outside of the library! Several members of the MSCA and friends of the MSCA will be there with a live Q and A with guest Naomi Novik! Memphis Armored Fight Club plus food trucks are also in attendance for the festival fantasy and geekery! Then you can hope on over to the Agricenter for the Memphis Pizza Festival possibly and support the local Pie Shops like the Hi-Tone and more.

MEMPHIS GHOSTBUSTERS AT GCT
You can come hear some great music on Friday September 27, 2024, from 12-1 as MOVIE MAGIC is performed by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra with themes from James Bond, Star Wars, Lion King, Psycho, and Ghostbusters!  Tickets are $10 with cookies and tea offered.  You can bring a sack lunch, I’m sure.  Lin Workman and Kevin Williams will be on hand to help dissuade any pesky spirits along with our friends from the 731 Ghostbusters!  Perhaps even a little green spud will be there for photos…

Immediately after the sessions, they’re going to digitize the sketches for their later large group discussions. This may be a listening session and you draw while the groups talk to illustrate their ideas as some of us once did for Coca Cola in Atlanta.

“FUNNY PAGES” ART SHOW RULES
RULE ONE: HAVE FUN!  You can be as funny or literal with the submissions as you like. It’s a mixed audience, so we want to stay away from far-leaning politics (stay centered) and while innuendo is acceptable keep in mind that kids will be there, too.

The gallery will take care of sales: artist 60%, theater 40%.

Let me know if you are interested in participating and how many pieces you wish to submit. The spaces we need to fill are 4×4’, We can have 4 smaller pieces, 2 or 3 medium pieces, or 1 large piece, to fill the area. You can submit one piece of art or 10 pieces.

Your art can be pencil and/or ink on paper, it can be a fine-art piece; it can be textiles, sculpture, photography, mixed media, trash-to-art – there are a gazillion ways to use art, and we’re always excited to see what people create!

Art MUST BE turned in by the November 5, 2024, dinner gathering – we’ve all got time to get some art created!  Out of town?  No problem, you can have the art shipped to us to display (you’ll also have to ship it back, btw.)

Art MUST be ready to hang (wired on back or some other way).

The art does NOT have to be professionally framed, but DOES have to “look like it.” For unframed canvas, please use gallery-wrapped canvas and don’t forget to paint the sides of the canvas as well.

Artists MUST submit their own 3×3” note card listing:
-Title
-Media used
-Price or NFS (Not for Sale)
-Artist Name
-Ways to contact the artist
(Please write clearly or type on white cardstock paper.)

If you haven’t already, artists MUST send a caricature and bio, including your social media, to be displayed. Artists agreeing to participate in art shows will not hold the MSCA nor the location liable or responsible for the artwork submitted. If you have not participated in an art show before, we’re all here to help. Ask questions!

If you want to find out more info about the MSCA and what’s going on around town, be sure to listen to the “Drawing Funny” podcast. You can subscribe to it on Spotify, Apple, or most podcasting platforms.
